Imagine having to go without something as simple as a pair of socks, wondering how you’ll keep your feet warm and dry as it gets colder outside. It’s something many of us have never had to consider, but for millions of people experiencing homelessness each year, many of whom are children, this is often a reality they face. Jim Burke Subaru wants to help. During the month of February, Jim Burke Subaru and retailers across the country are helping to support those in need by providing one of the most requested items needed by those experiencing homelessness: socks. This small item, most of us take for granted, can truly have an enormous impact by providing comfort and maintaining the health of those experiencing homelessness.

Shelby Humane's relationship with Jim Burke Subaru has played an essential role in advocating for adoptions and spreading awareness for homeless cats and dogs in Shelby County, Alabama. As Shelby Humane has reached a perilous situation of overcrowding putting homeless animals at-risk, we're so excited to announce that through the generous support of the Jim Burke Subaru Team seven homeless pets found their perfect, loving home on Saturday, October 8, 2022 during the Jim Burke Loves Shelby Humane Adoption Event! Thanks to Cherita McCants from Jim Burke Subaru in Birmingham, AL, we were able to provide adoption prep expenses for 30 pets, find forever homes for 7 pets, while also advocating for almost 800 cats and dogs seeking refuge at Shelby Humane! One of the precious lives that were changed due to the fantastic efforts of Jim Burke Subaru is that of a beautiful black and white mixed-breed dog named Rayna. Like many shelter pets, Rayna's journey had a rough beginning. When she was a baby, she won the hearts of her first owners by her adorable puppy features and personality. Unfortunately, as she grew into a medium sized dog, her owners didn't know how to care for her well and decided their best option was to chain her up outside. Rayna lived on a chain for the first year and a half of her life. Until one day everything changed, her owners had to move and couldn't take her with them so they graciously decided to surrender Rayna to Shelby Humane. At first the transition was devastating for her, she didn't understand why she was abandoned and became really depressed while living at the shelter. Things started looking up for Rayna when a foster family opened their home to her. Rayna quickly became the perfect house guest. “She loves to cuddle! She is house trained, and seems extremely grateful for the change in pace” her foster mom told Shelby Humane. Rayna's transition to her forever home came on October 8, 2022 when Jim Burke Subaru hosted a Subaru Loves Shelby Humane event. While at the event, Rayna found her forever home complete with other dogs to play and plenty of room to run as much as she wants! Rayna found love at Jim Burke Subaru! ** The first picture is of Rayna the day she was surrendered and the last picture is of Rayna with her new owner at Jim Burke Subaru!

Meals on Wheels of Central Alabama would not be able to serve homebound seniors throughout Jefferson County without strong community partnerships. This October, a group of parishioners from Saint Luke's Episcopal Church stepped up to form a team of volunteer drivers and adopt a route. A lead volunteer will coordinate scheduling and communications within the team to ensure a long-term commitment to serving elderly neighbors in need. At volunteer orientation, the new team met one of Meals on Wheels of Central Alabama's biggest stars--the trust Subaru!

On June 10, 2019, the Alabama Gulf Coast Chapter and Jim Burke Subaru had the opportunity to deliver 80 blankets to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. Upon arriving at the center, I met Danya and Hilary, Corporate Development & Special Events Coordinators. Cherita and Sean from Subaru also met us at the entrance with the blankets. These blankets will be distributed to patients at the cancer center to comfort them in their darkest hours. The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center was very welcoming. The Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated center located in a four-state area which includes Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. They treat about 5,000 patients each year. Hilary let us know that many of the patients had been complaining that they were cold because they had actually run low on their stock of blankets at the center. We could tell that this delivery was very appreciated by everyone involved. Thank you to UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and Jim Burke Subaru, not only for providing and letting us distribute these blankets and messages of hope, but for helping LLS spread its mission to see a cancer free world.

Jim Burke Subaru has been a valued partner of Shelby Humane Society for more than 6 years. As a non-profit organization, the monetary donations we receive each year obviously make a huge impact on our organization, but Subaru's impact means so much more than that. This partnership is special to us in that this dealership is a county away - yet year after year, in collaboration with the ASPCA, invite us to their location for adoption events that see an increase in adoptions each and every year. Because of this, our reach has grown well past the confines of our county - and Jim Burke Subaru's commitment to Shelby Humane and animal welfare as a whole means so much to our organization and our community. We look forward to continuing this life-saving partnership for many years to come.

On August 16th, Jim Burke Subaru reminded our community how much they “Love to Care.” Jim Burke staff pulled up in a beautiful 2019 Subaru Ascent, fully loaded with a special delivery for UAB cancer patients and their families. For the third year in a row, Jim Burke Subaru has partnered with the Alabama chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to deliver beautiful, soft blankets to those in their darkest hours. New in 2017, Subaru realized the need for comfort extended beyond the patients and began sharing art kits filled with markers, crayons, and other supplies to keep the little ones busy while their loved one goes through treatment. Care packages were delivered to UAB’s Young Supporters Board to be distributed to patients being treated in the UAB Cancer Center. Caring is in the very DNA of Subaru, and both LLS and UAB appreciate all they are doing on behalf of cancer patients in our community.

On August 2nd, the Meals on Wheels of Central Alabama’s Subaru Outback delivered goodness in the form of non-perishable food to community seniors. The Meals on Wheels Outback went to Birmingham’s New Pilgrim Baptist Church to pick up food donated by the church to share with seniors in Birmingham’s West End area.Candice Harris, staff member of United Way of Central Alabama and volunteer with Meals on Wheels said, “Over the weekend, the church’s youth group had a crowd of more than 50 kids working together to sort and package bags of food for community seniors. The kids gave to a great cause and had fun doing it.”Thanks to the giving spirit of New Pilgrim Baptist Church, as well as Subaru, the pantries of seniors in Birmingham’s West End are a little fuller today.

Here she goes again…United Way of Central Alabama's Meals on Wheels volunteer coordinator Maleia Tortorigi is off and running in the Meals on Wheels Subaru Outback to catch up with volunteers across Jefferson County, Alabama. Through more than 10 volunteer-appreciation events, she is meeting 100+ volunteers, many of whom have been delivering meals to homebound elderly citizens for years. She also loves meeting NEW volunteers in her new Subaru, and giving them test rides to deliver meals in the WHEELS that power our program!

United Way of Central Alabama's Meals on Wheels program provides more than just a nutritious meal to homebound seniors in Jefferson County—the dedicated volunteers also use the daily visits to make sure critical needs of seniors are met. The network of over 500 volunteers grew last fall when the newly-elected Mayor of Birmingham Randall Woodfin (pictured above in the purple shirt) donated his time to the Meals on Wheels program, doing his part to ensure that seniors in his city are being looked after. The day began at United Way of Central Alabama when CEO and President Drew Langloh met with Mayor Woodfin to kickstart an action-packed week of service ahead of the mayor’s inauguration. “I thought it was important that we start all of our inaugural activities in the space of community service,” began Woodfin. “What better way to do that than to stand here and support not just United Way, but also Meals on Wheels.” After securing the hot meals and loading up a newly-donated Subaru Outback, one of 50 donated nationwide through the Subaru “Love Promise” Initiative, Woodfin and Langloh set off on their delivery route through the Norwood and Fountain Heights communities. The Mayor had the opportunity to listen directly to the concerns of these seniors, visiting with clients and providing contact that most homebound seniors wouldn’t see otherwise. Research shows that 1 in 6 seniors in Alabama struggle with hunger. With more than 21,000 homebound seniors in Jefferson County alone, the need for Meals on Wheels is greater than ever. Seniors participating in the program keep their independence and are able to stay in their homes, on top of combating hunger. United Way’s Meals on Wheels serves more than 187,000 meals a year, with a current waiting list of 1700. The more volunteer drivers the program gets, the more seniors they are able to serve. “This donation means we’re able to ramp up delivery and more efficiently get hot meals to those who truly need them most,” said Langloh. “We’re so grateful that Subaru chose our program to receive a vehicle, and even more excited to put it to work.”

For the second year, Jim Burke Subaru has been showing how Subaru “Loves To Care” by delivering blankets to patients being treated for cancer at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC). During the month of June, visitors to Jim Burke were able to fill out cards with words of inspiration to accompany the blankets. In addition, Jim Burke delivered art kits for children at the hospitals to help entertain them during these difficult days. On June 22, 2017, Skip Luck and Kayleigh Cruise of Jim Burke Subaru partnered with Kate Siqueira of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to deliver these care packages to a representative of the UAB Young Supporters Board, Callen Clyce, to be distributed to their patients. When asked why Jim Burke participates in this event, Kayleigh described the unfortunate trend of employees whose lives have been touched by cancer which is why their store was excited to be able to share some comfort with the patients at UAB as we all work together towards finding a cure for blood cancers. We all feel great when dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens get adopted. But our mission goes well beyond that, and because of the support from Jim Burke Subaru and Subaru of America, we are able to accomplish more than just pet adoptions. Through collaboration with local vets, trainers, and other local businesses, our Pet Retention Program keeps pets in their homes while keeping the shelter population down. Here at SHS, we've seen that a lot of pet owners are at the end of their rope when they come to surrender their animal. These owners love their pets, but financial barriers keep them from being able to afford medical care, behavioral training and assistance, or simply a dog house or fence to protect the pets they love so dearly. This program, due in part to the generous support from Jim Burke Subaru and Subaru of America, allows us to assist these families with these financial burdens in order for them to keep their pet. Take Daisy for example. (pictured) Her life before adoption amounted to fending for herself and living alone in the wild. Having a home and a family was a huge adjustment, and she needed specialized training that her new dad just couldn't afford. Through our Pet Retention Program, we were able to assist her new dad in training costs, all without having Daisy returned to the shelter. She is now the happy dog she was always meant to be! Thank you Subaru for your generous support of SHS and all that we do TOGETHER to save pets in our community.

On behalf of all of us at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), including millions of dedicated volunteers nationwide, we thank you and all your colleagues at Jim Burke Subaru for participating in the inaugural Subaru Love to Care Program with LLS. Your support means a great deal to us, in our efforts to fund more research to find cures for cancer, and improve the quality of life for blood cancer patients and their families. Additionally, your support and enthusiasm for the work of our local LLS Chapter creates a winning partnership in the community, and a powerful team supporting cancer patients! We are honored to work with you to bring comfort, support, and warmth to cancer patients during what is most likely the most difficult time in their lives. Someday Is Today, Louis J.
